Visionaries

The Sauska range is a labor of love, reflecting the mind of two visionary thinkers, the creativity of a bright young team and the complexity of an unparalleled terroir.

Régis Camus

Sparkling winemaker, 30 years in Champagne. Father, grandfather. Globe-trotter.

What are you all about?

I love consistency! In my mind, blending is all about consistency: delivering the same House style, year-in, year-out. Whatever the climactic conditions, I evaluate and get a feel for the expression of every little plot of land and all the grape varietals. As for a painter, these are all the subtle base colours that I will then assemble to create and recreate the unique House style. Or colour. For this, you need to know and feel where you want to be going, have an understanding for your vineyards and grapes. And enjoy starting over every year!

Your first impressions?

I am really enjoying working with the team here. Young winemakers and viticulturists, who really know their soils, their grapes and their wines. I am learning so much about Tokaj and so quickly thanks to them, their passion and their devotion. It is true of Furmint too, whose intrinsic characteristics I am discovering – trying to find its place in the Sauska House style.

What surprised you the most?

The most surprising element is the energy at Sauska. Christian is a feisty leader. The team is as much rooted in their Tokaj land as they are patiently coveting the bottles maturing in the Budafok chalk cellars or running around at the pace of pulsing Budapest. Such different universes and rythms that they manage to encompass and transmit to the brand. Fascinating.

Where do you see us being in 5 years?

In five years, we will have totally mastered the Sauska House style. And I will be able to have a glass of it wherever my travels take me!

The Sauska range is a labor of love, reflecting the mind of two visionary thinkers, the professionalism of a bright young team and the complexity of an unparalleled terroir.

What is your Tokaj vision?

My Tokaj is not about the Aszú or the Furmint grape per se. It is about showing character and quality at many levels in still wines and of course, sparkling. Sparkling wine to me is the finest instrument to showcase what this world-class terroir is capable of. Creating the right vineyard structure for sparkling wine is an extremely complex and beautifully diverse process involving analytical and instinctive elements. To me, Régis is the perfect partner in crime on this journey.

Do you have a different approach when it comes to sparkling wine?

In a way, I am very simple-minded. I like to analyze, understand, compare. Modify, reanalyze, understand the changes and compare again. This is the most important thing I preach about all the time to our young team: record precisely what we do so you have data to compare. Modern winemaking is scientific and I like it. People need to understand that the world of facts can be just as magical as the world of senses. No contradiction here. They are connected.

What do you enjoy the most in the process?

I am truly impressed by the art of blending. The patience one has to have if one wants to reach perfection! Nothing in this venture is immediate: nature takes its time, then the vinification process and the understanding of the singular expression of each plot, then collecting reserve wines year after year, then the blending and then… again… time on the lees to attain the sparkling style we want. Making wine in Tokaj taught me a lot about patience but this is clearly beyond it.

Where do you see us being in 5 years?

In 5 years? I am planning to sit under the tree with Régis. The sparkling wine in our glasses will be a beauty. Unquestionably Tokaj and unmistakably Sauska.
